A terrific and rare stained glass window of aluminium and blue glass construction representing the infant Jesus Christ in the arms of his mother Mary floating supraterranean. Jesse tree to the rear.
Frank Roper created works in all manner of materials but it is his ability to combine the traditional idea of a flat stained glass window with the sculptural qualities of a three dimensional figurative passage that is exceptional.Having looked closely at this work there are a few finishing touches that must have been undertaken during the installation.Marys feet have been reattached and a handful (the finger marks are clearly visible) of putty has been stuffed in to the back of Marys head (Presumably to get rid of the piercing demonic eyes that would have appeared at dawn).
Frank Ropers works can be seen in many cathedrals and churches including Durham Cathedral, Peterborough Cathedral and a good reference with similar construction techniques to this window is the *Crucifixion with Mary and John* outside St Germans Church Adamstown Cardiff Wales
